About Food Stamps

If you're like many people, it can be hard to make ends meet. The Food Stamp Program is a nutrition program that helps individuals and families buy food and eat healthy. The program provides a monthly sum of money on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card to be used, like a debit card, at most grocery stores and other food retailers.

The Maryland Department of Human Resources (DHR), runs the Food Stamp Program in the state through with the help of county governments. In Montgomery County, your local Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for administering the Food Stamp Program. Virginia residents, visit the Virginia Department of Social Services to apply online for food stamps or see a list of local offices where you can apply in person. District of Columbia Residents can visit the DC Hunger Solutions Food Stamps Center.

For more information and to apply, call 1-800-332-6347, print out an application online, or pick up an application by visiting any Montgomery County DHHS office as listed below. Completed applications--along with copies of supporting documents--may be mailed to your nearest DHHS office. If you mail them, please write your name and your date of birth on each document.
