Think you might be eligible for public assistance in paying for groceries?
The Federal Government's Food Stamp Program helps roughly 24 million Americans purchase food every year. The program is administered by each state in cooperation with the US Department of Agriculture. In Maryland, Montgomery County residents should apply with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). People who live in other counties must apply in their own county. Montgomery County DHHS can take applications for food stamps and mail it to the appropriate county, but residents from other counties are strongly urged to take it or mail it themselves.
Transferring your Food Stamps case from another Maryland county?
If you've recently moved to Montgomery County from another county in Maryland, you can request that your case be transferred here from there. All that is required to transfer a case is verification of the new address. Once it arrives in the Montgomery County DHHS office, a worker will contact the customer to verify new income, living arrangements, household, etc.
